The University of Belize and Belmopan City Council Strengthen Partnership for National Development

His Worship Khalid Belisle, Mayor of Belmopan, made a courtesy call on the new President of the University of Belize, Professor Clement Sankat on Wednesday, 5th April, 2017 at the University’s Main Campus in Belmopan. This was a familiarization meeting allowing the two leaders to discuss how best the Belmopan City Council and the University can work collaboratively together in such a way to simultaneously contribute to the Development of the Municipality, the University and the nation of Belize as a whole.

Caribbean Local Economic Development (CARILED)

The Local Government body plays a vital role in supporting the private sector, MSME's and Entrepreneurs through Local economic development as a promoter, facilitator, broker of alliances, partner and advocate.

Local Economic Development is a relatively new concept in the Caribbean. It is a process where community stakeholders, the municipality, the private sector, the university, non-governmental institutions, and the public, work together to create better economic growth conditions, increase employment generation and enhance quality of Life.

The LED Strategy is a working document developed by the Community of the City of Belmopan, The Belmopan City Council, undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada.

Child Advisory Board (CAB)


The Belmopan City Council is proud to have the Child Advisory Board (CAB) as a partner. CAB is there to give suggestions, ideas, and to have a say on behalf of the children of Belmopan. The purpose of CAB is for the children to be inclusive pertaining to development within the City of Belmopan.

The process is that the City Council write to the different schools within Belmopan requesting 2 representative from each school. The age range is from 6-19 including disable and drop-out students. 

Mrs. Anna Banner Guy is the current rapporteur.

Belmopan Business Association (BBA)

The Belmopan Business Association (BBA) is a result of an initiative from the Belmopan City Council (BCC), which drew the support of several business persons’ interest in developing a structure, or a vehicle to advocate for the regularization of the business environment, and the facilitation of business development. There are several constraints experienced by businesses in Belmopan. The BBA sees its main function as advocating for interests of its members to address these constraints.

BBA incorporated April 2016 and is intended to serve the business community in Belmopan that are properly registered with a trade license.  The Board of Directors (BOD) is comprised of 12 members; 11 business representatives and 1 representative from the BCC. These BOD members presently are the only members of the Association.

The BBA’s mission is: We serve as a voice for the Belmopan business community and work to create an enabling environment for sustainable development. 

The vision of the BBA is: A Belmopan where businesses are sustainable and contribute to its socio-economic growth.

UN-Habitat - United Nations Human Settlements Programme

UN-Habitat is the United Nations programme working towards a better urban future. Its mission is to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all.

The purpose of this MoU is to provide a framework of cooperation within which UN-Habitat and BMPCITCO will prepare City wide Strategy for the City of Belmopan. The collaboration between the Parties in Belmopan will be implemented with a focus on sustainable urban development with a special focus on sustainable urbanization in Belmopan, with a special focus of compact, connected, integrated, inclusive and climate-compatible development of Belmopan.
